It's been a long weekend of research and ideation for an online multiplayer game. Exploring current trends in online multiplayer games [fig 1]

As a narrative focused game, this research explores trends in narrative, environment, combat, rewards and progression. Due to the range of online mulitplayer games with a narrative, I've split them into 3 sub-genres (MMO's, Open World Shooters and Online Sanboxes).
Current trends tend to focus on level based progression with experience points gained from combat or completing quests. Gear/weapon based rewards are a way of tracking player progression and rewards within the game. In terms of project development, the use of a levelling system along with loot based rewards will employed to provide incentive for players to complete the challenges in the game.
